Black Eye Peas-Music Analysis # 2
Music Analysis # 2
Behind the Song- "Where is the love?"
According to Glamore "In June 2003, The Black Eye Peas released hit song "Where is the Love" in response to the 9/11 terror attacks. Its lyrics addressed issues including terrorism, racism, gang crime, pollution, war, intolerance, and violence against LGBT people"
This is one of my favorite songs to listen to especially when breaking news comes to racism, vicious crimes, and gang violence that is happening around the world. As I was told growing up, treat others the way you want to be treated.
Music Element
Timbre
The whole song there are two families that play throughout the song. The String families, Violin, Cello, Guitar, and Percussion Family, Drum. Each family plays their part to make the music interesting, which is explain in dynamics, interval, and pitch.
Pitch
There are two pitches in the song Where is the love. The first pitch is an octave, where the string family steps in during the verse, and the violins ascents up just at the end of each verse. The other octave is with the 4 notes that descend during the verse and plays again in the chorus.
Interval
There are four intervals that play throughout the song. Just when the song starts, you can hear the two-beat that is low that play throughout the verses and chorus. The second beat, I believe the high pitch guitar starts out first, then as the music continues it turns into a lower guitar playing. The third is a repeated beat that is high then descends to a low tone and it plays throughout the song. The fourth interval is a cello that is playing a repeated tone during the third verse, then breaks off at the chorus.
Dynamics
The introduction of the song starts out soft with the Violin
string family, then just as the song gets going it loud. The dynamics for the
song go back and forth to soft and loud while the band sings/raps the song. The
chorus of the song makes it soft dynamics, where Justin Timberlake is featured
in the song.
Lyrics
The lyrics of the song is strong because it talks about what
the world is going through from race, war, criticisms, and gang violence. If
you overlook the lyrics, there is a lot of rhyming at the end of each line. The
third verse of the song is my favorite part to sing along to because it pops
out more than the first and second verses. You can find the lyrics here.

That is a great song selection, especially with everything going on in today's world. Racism, gang crime, pollution, war, intolerance, and violence against LGBT people are still huge issues that are get to be solved.
ReplyDeleteThere should be more songs like this that bring awareness to the issues going on. Many people enjoy listening to music so it could be used to teach about these issues. It might be a better approach than just listening to the news. Many of these popular artists could be more influential than they realize.
DeleteThe day I first heard this song is the day that it was on replay. In this song, the lyrics being sang/rapped are telling a story. Bringing awareness to the things happening around the world allowing you to see it in the way others may be seeing it. Great song choice!
ReplyDeleteI love this song as well. It's so amazing to see a song that was written 17 years ago still be so important today and for the lyrics to be so powerful. It is also kind of sad to see that the lyrics still hold so much truth and weight because we would have loved to see more change since then. The song does a good job of using both singing and rapping to show and make people feel a certain way and it does a great job of making people feel the way the song is meant to. Great job!
